Welcome to Jacqui & Anatoli's Art Auction

Jacqui, Anatoli, Ignat and Milena in Varna, Bulgaria Summer 2007

In July 2010, Anatoli’s father Ignat was hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk in Bulgaria. The impact was so great that his leg had to be amputated and radical life-saving spinal surgery was performed.  In a country like Bulgaria that has undergone an unsuccessful partial transition towards privatized healthcare, much of the medical expenses have not been covered by his insurance. Ignat’s recovery, while impressive, has been slow. An added difficulty is that the judicial system is very corrupt and it is not certain that the perpetrators—well-connected and wealthy residents in a city where personal connections can determine the outcome of a case—will ever pay sufficiently for the damages.

With such depressing news, we felt the need to do something positive and proactive to help Ignat. This is when we thought about creating an online art auction to raise money to cover his medical expenses.  The art auction is made up of wonderfully talented and well-established artists from across the country that we have the great pleasure of having in our lives. Please take a look at the beautiful photography, silkscreen prints, paintings, sculpture, art rock posters, sketches and hand-made jewelry they have generously donated.

Please visit our Flickr site to view higher resolution images of each of the items up for auction.

Please consult the Auction Policies & Procedures page at the header of the blog before bidding and if you have any questions about how to participate.

Paul Brewer - Supergrass - Tara Mcpherson

silkscreened flyer signed by the artist, Tara McPherson
Piece is matted to 11 x 14

Minimum bid: $35

I am an author and illustrator of children’s books and magazines. I also like to collect art. On our walls there are illustrations of mine, plus others from children’s books that my wife, Kathleen Krull, has written. Many pieces come from our travels around the world and some are gifts from family and friends.

I started collecting rock concert posters as a teenager, some from the shows that I went to and some that I didn’t. I saw groups like The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Frank Zappa, to name a few, at the many shows that I attended. I still have the posters from back then as well as others that I’ve collected over the years. A lot of these are also hanging on the walls of our house.

For this auction, to help Ignat Ignatov with his increasing medical expenses, I am offering a rock concert poster, three concert handbills, a flyer from a late 60’s Psychedelic Shop, and an original piece of art from a book that I illustrated. A signed copy of the book is also included. Let the bidding begin!

16"x20" (unframed)

ultrachrome ink on cotton paper

Minimum bid: $150

Each of the 63 prints in the Neighbors series was made via a sequence of virtual walks taken around my neighborhood in San Diego in 2008 on Google Maps Street View. Each image was captured through screen shots of all the people I saw during my “walks”. While the project is a critique of taste and a push against the standards of high resolution photography it is also an exploration of the myth and possible death of the neighborhood as community. I am able to interact with my neighbors by taking her or his picture without ever leaving my home or even opening my blinds.

A real transformation occurs when you see them in print form.

Sarah Doherty - Cabbage Patch

Concrete
One cabbage patch girl, 10" high

Minimum bid: $75

Statement:

When MICA faculty Sarah Doherty moved two years ago from downtown San Diego to a carriage house in between the two alleys behind N. Calvert Street, she was a bit horrified by the conditions of the smaller alley affected by an 85 percent vacancy rate in a three-block span. Previously working with notions of fault-lines in her work prior to the move, she soon grew to think of the N. Calvert Street alley as a metaphorical kind of fault-line affected by socio-economics and urban decline. Fascinated by the contexts inherent in these properties, Doherty began her own explorations of site-specific pieces in the alley. This soon extended to her students at MICA as urban intervention assignments for such courses as Concrete Culture: The City as Text, for which students responded to and with the contexts of the sites. Realizing the benefits of transformation and cultural dialogue that developed through these small gestures as evidenced in neighborhood interactions with the works and artists, Doherty developed a bigger vision of transformation and the possibilities of extending the cultural corridor between Station North Arts District and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Doherty has subsequently organized 22 pieces to inhabit the backyards of these vacant properties through April 2010. Participants include artists, architects and contemporary dancers. Working with city agencies, community organizations and artists, the alley and properties will be cleaned of debris and re-populated with creative works and light.

The cabbage patch dolls are a part of "Axis Alley" in Baltimore:

Note:

"Locals only"--since this doll is made of solid concrete, this piece will be for Baltimore bidders only.

Katrina McHugh - Untitled

Untitled
14" x 20"

Minimum bid: $25 - there are three prints available

Statement:

I am an artist and graphic designer currently living in San Francisco, California. Though I primarily work in letterpress, this piece was created during an exploration into screen printing. The inspiration for the motifs came from concurrent reading being done on Japonisme, specifically the mighty influence that Japanese art had on the European Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the last century. Inspired by beauty I found in much of the poster work from that time period I attempted to create my own expression of the style. I hope you enjoy it.

Gary Brewer - Ozymandias Series #3

Ozymandias Series #3

Minimum bid: $250
(listed in gallery as $750)

Statement:

Inspired by E. O. Wilson’s notion of “biophilia ” as an empathy towards all living things, my work is driven by a sense of intimacy and personal identification with the natural world. In my paintings, my experience of nature tends to express a sense of wonder and awe at the complexity of the web of life.

Lydia Prentiss - Edwige

Work:

Edwige

Limited edition screenprint
8"x10.75"

Minimum bid:

$60

Statement:

I explore themes that are heavy with psychological significance where repeating images become symbols. Here, the right brain, non-verbal, symbolic mode meets the pre-conscious- that psychologically rich half-hidden area of the psyche. Like the 20th Century surrealists, I hope to express a world otherwise only available through dreams- but unlike the surrealists, my nightmares may be more transparent.. Like Carl Jung’s alchemical process, the art builds a world heavy with suggestion and fertile for growth. My sketch-book journal is an important part of this process because it is a safe space to record and explore emotionally charged thoughts and experiences. I share certain pages because I hope that the intimacy and specificity of my experience may resonate with others: transcending the personal reaching towards the universal. My paintings, drawings and sculptures often reference the same imagery and ideas found in the journal pages. In these pieces- the psychological intensity tends to be more removed as the literal back-story is dropped. Instead, the process and craft takes precedence over emotion.

See: www.ghanayouthphoto.org

Yaw Asiamah, 12 years old:

Yaw Asiamah lives in Ghana, West Africa and is a student in the Ghana Youth Photo Project. He is one of 18 students from Nima, one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Ghana’s capital city, Accra. Through free photography classes the Ghanaian students are given an opportunity to visually represent their country, culture and religion. Their photos have been displayed in the United States and in Ghana with the intentions of challenging the stereotypes of Africa as only a land of war, AIDS and famine as well as challenging the negative labels that Ghanaian society has placed on the neighborhood of Nima. It is time for Nima/Ghana/Africa to be represented by the people who live there and not through the negative sensationalism of mainstream media.

Aline Mare - Bullet Hand

Bullet Hand
22 x 27, framed

Minimum bid: $150

Statement:

I consider myself an interdisciplinary artist who has been producing mixed-media work incorporating video and photographic elements for the past 20 years. My career began in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, coming out of a background of theatre, performance and installation art where I worked with such luminaries as Richard Foreman, Meredith Monk, Robert Frank and Robert Wilson. I was a member of the Artist Collective, Colab for several years and performed in a multi-media partnership, Erotic Psyche throughout Manhattan and Europe throughout the 80s.
Following the disbanding of Erotic Psyche, I moved to San Francisco to complete a MFA from SFAI where I produced the film Saline Solution, which garnered support and awards internationally, exhibiting at The Cinematheque in SF, The Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. I have continued to expand my media work, concentrating on photography and video, exhibiting in California and New York consistently.
In the past five years I have continued my multi-media exploration with imagery interfacing science, light , and the body, completing several more series including Electric Flowers (2006), Beautiful Boys (2007) and The Hands (2008). I am currently completing a new series of images of 10 year old Jewish girls, Seeing the Light (2009-10).
The Hand Series (2008-2009) is part of an ongoing fascination with the fragments of the body seen as acute aspects of portraiture. Each hand is imaged as a clay canvas and embedded with an imprint of culture and nature. It is as if the hand has morphed and the flesh has become internalized into a kind of technological evolutionary second skin.

Bruce Reeves is mastering his technique at the Art Academy of San Diego, under the tutorial guide of Reed Cardwell, a master painter of the abstract. Bruce also trains during the summer at the Provincetown Art Association, MA.

With a degree in Landscape Architecture from Mississippi State University, Bruce uses various textures and mediums to work his sense of the abstract into a merge of color at one with nature.

Bruce’s photography and paintings currently hang in private galleries in Provincetown, Tucson, Memphis, San Antonio, and Dallas and throughout San Diego. Bruce is the owner and founder of Hillcrest Ace Hardware.
