Statement:
I explore themes that are heavy with psychological significance where repeating images become symbols. Here, the right brain, non-verbal, symbolic mode meets the pre-conscious- that psychologically rich half-hidden area of the psyche. Like the 20th Century surrealists, I hope to express a world otherwise only available through dreams- but unlike the surrealists, my nightmares may be more transparent.. Like Carl Jung’s alchemical process, the art builds a world heavy with suggestion and fertile for growth. My sketch-book journal is an important part of this process because it is a safe space to record and explore emotionally charged thoughts and experiences. I share certain pages because I hope that the intimacy and specificity of my experience may resonate with others: transcending the personal reaching towards the universal. My paintings, drawings and sculptures often reference the same imagery and ideas found in the journal pages. In these pieces- the psychological intensity tends to be more removed as the literal back-story is dropped. Instead, the process and craft takes precedence over emotion.
