Yaw Asiamah, 12 years old:
Yaw Asiamah lives in Ghana, West Africa and is a student in the Ghana Youth Photo Project. He is one of 18 students from Nima, one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Ghana’s capital city, Accra. Through free photography classes the Ghanaian students are given an opportunity to visually represent their country, culture and religion. Their photos have been displayed in the United States and in Ghana with the intentions of challenging the stereotypes of Africa as only a land of war, AIDS and famine as well as challenging the negative labels that Ghanaian society has placed on the neighborhood of Nima. It is time for Nima/Ghana/Africa to be represented by the people who live there and not through the negative sensationalism of mainstream media.
