Statement:
I consider myself an interdisciplinary artist who has been producing mixed-media work incorporating video and photographic elements for the past 20 years. My career began in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, coming out of a background of theatre, performance and installation art where I worked with such luminaries as Richard Foreman, Meredith Monk, Robert Frank and Robert Wilson. I was a member of the Artist Collective, Colab for several years and performed in a multi-media partnership, Erotic Psyche throughout Manhattan and Europe throughout the 80s.
Following the disbanding of Erotic Psyche, I moved to San Francisco to complete a MFA from SFAI where I produced the film Saline Solution, which garnered support and awards internationally, exhibiting at The Cinematheque in SF, The Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. I have continued to expand my media work, concentrating on photography and video, exhibiting in California and New York consistently.
In the past five years I have continued my multi-media exploration with imagery interfacing science, light , and the body, completing several more series including Electric Flowers (2006), Beautiful Boys (2007) and The Hands (2008). I am currently completing a new series of images of 10 year old Jewish girls, Seeing the Light (2009-10).
The Hand Series (2008-2009) is part of an ongoing fascination with the fragments of the body seen as acute aspects of portraiture. Each hand is imaged as a clay canvas and embedded with an imprint of culture and nature. It is as if the hand has morphed and the flesh has become internalized into a kind of technological evolutionary second skin.
